What's in a name?

Legislation gives rise to a diverse vocabulary for regulatory and compliance activities. The names for an approval to perform an activity extend from licence, certificate, and permit, through accreditation, registration, consent, authority and endorsement. While there are different terms for describing these approvals, the objective of the regulatory process is the same. We regulate activities in society as a way to manage risk and reduce harm.
